I had the pleasure of speaking with Cosmic Titan, the leader of the City of Hero Supergroup, Legion of Valor. Voted as the 2006 City of Heroes Players Choice Award for Favorite Supergroup, this guild has enlisted over 1000 members in the past 2 years. Its success has come largely because of the strong friendships they have established from the game and the strong foundations they have established with their standards and rules.
Q: Tell us a little history regarding your guild and when was it established? A: The Legion of Valor is a superhero group on the Victory Server. We won the 2006 City of Heroes Players Choice Award for Favorite Supergroup. LoV was originally called Hard Corps and it was established in May of 2004. Because of there was a Valiant comic by a similar name (Hard C.O.R.P.S.), the guild name was later force to change its name due to trademark regulations NCSoft was enforcing. By a vote, we decided upon the name the Legion of Valor.
Q: What MMOG are you and your guild currently involved with? A: We have established a super villain guild in the City of Villains called Fallen Legion. We are the top ranked villain group on the Victory server and have also won the 2006 City of Heroes Players Choice Awards for Favorite Villain Group. We are currently not in any other MMOG’s. I think large guilds playing in too many MMOG’s lose focus on what's important.
Q: What was the biggest problem your guild was facing? How did you deal with it? And what problems are you currently facing? A: We had a few incidents in the past two year but luckily drama was minimized because it was handle quickly and smoothly. It involved some members in argument with another. I think we have very established rules and standards that allow us to handle it well. We will not tolerate immaturity. It’s important to identify the problem early on and terminate the issues quickly before it escalates. It’s important to identify and get rid of the problematic player early if needed. Luckily, we haven’t had many problems recently. But overall, player apathy remains a big problem for all guilds
Q: What advice do you have for a young guild leader or someone hoping to start up a MMOG guild? A: First of all, you need to spend a lot of time! Make sure you have established high standards and rules to set up a strong foundation. Make sure you don't deviate from your goals as your guild gets larger. Selecting really good officers really helps! Keep people motivated. Find something to offer and make your guild unique. Too many guilds are too alike and there’s nothing special.
